I’m Peter O’Toole, not the actor, the illustrator! I have been illustrating freelance since 2010 and work in my studio in Huddersfield. I have worked for clients like Disney, Microsoft, Computer Arts, Doritos to name a few and I’m really happy to now be on board with Calm and Xpress.
How are you?
Feeling good! Had a few cool projects to work on recently and I’m gonna be in a few magazines in the coming weeks so thats always a good feeling! Planning an exhibition in Moscow and got a photo shoot near an abandoned mental asylum for a client tomorrow. Variety is the spice of life!
Tell us about your work
Very 1950′s advertising inspired. I like to use minimal colour and halftone. Throw in a bit of wear and tear and bobs your uncle. I also try and translate this style through to moving image on a few projects but that’s still in its infancy!
Do you express yourself through creativity?
Hell yes. Its easily the best way to express yourself in my opinion. I was lucky as I started drawing straight off the bat so it always came naturally. Being creative can be frustrating at times but at the other end of the spectrum it is the most satisfying thing in the world.
The tee shirt design for the Calm/Xpress gigs! That was fun. It’s great that so many good musicians are on board. Before that I did an illustration of Celtic’s young Tony Watt scoring his recent champions league winner against Barcelona for Pickles Magazine. (Tony Watt plays Braveheart in the drawing)
I just watched the Bones Brigade documentary (Skateboarding). Their story is amazing, Just doing what you want to do for a living and not conforming to ‘real jobs’ . A few of those guys were child prodigies like Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero and Rodney Mullen but even less gifted people like Lance Mountain had a place within the group. All those guys did was travel the world and do what they loved to do, and get paid for it! That’s very inspiring to me.
What Are you reading/watching/listening to at the moment?
Well the Walking Dead has returned so I’m back on that, same with Californication. I’m always starting books and never finishing them, the last was Kevin Smith’s autobiography. I’m listening to a few new sounds that friends have recommended – Tame Impala and Captain Murphy!
Why do you get out of bed in the morning?
Because I’m living the dream and I don’t want it to end. So I try make the most of it everyday. The most boring jobs I have to do are better than the most exciting job everyone else has to do and I want it to stay that way!
